La Brea Tar Pits
Right in the heart of the city, visit the site of the largest collection of Ice Age fossils ever found. Located in Hancock Park, these asphalt pits have been seeping for more than 40,000 years. Scientists have found the remains of hundreds of species including herbivores, Columbian mammoth, American mastodon, ground sloth, western horse, ancient bison, dwarf pronghorn, extinct camel and the saber-toothed cat, all of whom became fatally entrapped.
